Scholarships

from Prehistory to the Christian era - 2012-2013
Description
The “Ancient Egypt Heritage, from prehistory to the Christian era” scholarships were initiated to highlight the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Montreal Chapter of the Society for the Studies of Egyptian Antiquities, and to promote the study of ancient Egypt in Quebec.

The first scholarship, the Excellence Scholarship, consists of a $1,000 prize and a one week trip to Egypt. The second, which recognizes the Best Communication, is made of a $400 prize and a $100 gift-certificate for the purchase of books. Theses prizes cannot be exchanged, redeemed for cash, transferred or refunded.


1. Eligibility requirements :
  * Be a citizen of Canada, a permanent resident, or an Egyptian student with a student visa;
  * Reside in Quebec;
* Meet the following requirements:
o All candidates must be full time students, and at least 18 years of age;
o All candidates must be university students;
o Students must be enrolled full time and have good marks.

2. Preferred disciplines :
All scientific disciplines that touch upon the history of Egypt from the prehistoric period to the Christian era (e.g.: history of art, ancient studies, archaeology, theology, Coptology, medicine, astronomy, etc.).

3. Deadline :
Candidates’ applications must be postmarked no later than November 15th, 2011. Applications received after the deadline, and those sent by fax or email will not be considered.

5. Application requirements :
A candidate’s application must include the following in quadruplicate:
1. The duly completed application form for the “Ancient Egypt Heritage, from prehistory to the Christian
era” scholarship,
2. A certified true copy of the last diploma obtained at the college or university level,
3. Documents certifying your full time student status, with the seal or stamp of the institution along with
a photocopy of its student visa,
4. Your last official transcript, at the college or university level,
5. Two confidential letters of recommendation (from the director, the career counselor, or a teacher)
word processed, and typed on the letterhead of the educational institution from which the originate,
6. Contact information where you can be reached at any time, and your email address,
7. Proof of citizenship or residency, or of student status ( photocopy of a valid birth certificate; a
passport; certificate of residency; or a students visa).
(Documents included will not be returned).

6. Selection process and requirements :
1.  The application file must by forwarded to the Montreal Chapter of the Society for the Studies of
Egyptian Antiquities,
2. An evaluation committee, made up of professionals, will study the applications and, based on the
quality of the candidates’ academic records, the originality of their presentations, and the relevan
ce of their answers to the questionnaire, will recommend 10 candidates on January 1st, 2012,
3. The finalists will be contacted in order for them to prepare a 20-minute oral presentation, scheduled
for April 2012, with the actual day to be confirmed,
4. Following the candidates’ oral presentation in April, the committee will meet to select the winners.
The evaluation criteria are as follows: originality and cohesiveness of the presentation; its
audiovisual quality; its impact on the audience; their presentation style; the quality of the language;
and the use of sources,
5. The winners will receive their scholarship on the same day,
6. The recipients agree to publish a report on their experience in the Escribe newsletter of the Chapter
of the Society for the Studies of Egyptian Antiquities, describing how this scholarship has assisted
them in their research,
7. The recipients agree to mention the help provided by the Montreal Chapter of the Society for the
Studies of Egyptian Antiquities in any communication or publication arising from their research.
8. The recipient of the Excellence Scholarship agrees to take all necessary measures to obtain an entry
visa to Egypt, and to use his/her airline ticket within the limits set by Egyptair, failing which the
scholarship will be given to the runner-up.

The “Ancient Egypt Heritage from Prehistory to the Christian Era” Scholarships are made up of gifts generously offered by its SSEA members, friends, and by the financial support of Egyptair, the Egyptian Tourism Office of Montreal (ETA); the Egyptian Cultural & Educational Office of the Consulate General of Egypt in Canada (BACEC); the Society of Near Ancient Studies (SNES); Voyages Innovation; and Library Monet; each of whom is eager to promote knowledge of Ancient Egypt in Quebec. .
